week 1 taking Aktivate

Good to see

macca1997uk

We’ve now been giving Emma Aktivate for a week. The capsules are emptied into her food, so no stress involved (except whether she’s actually going to eat the food, Emm being a fussy cat!!). We have started to notice a real difference. Her coat is in much better condition, she has much more energy, is awake for more than a couple of hours a day (part of her CDS was increased sleeping!) and best of all she seems much brighter in herself. If I come in the house or I approach her she reacts, she’s eating twice a day, and she’s not yowled for 4 days (it was night and day before). I’m hoping they are really working , and it’s not just a very good patch. If it is it’s the best period she’s had since before her diagnosis. And even if this is just a good patch, it’s lovely…

Now we all want to feed our dogs and cats the best food we can find, right? By Nature Active Defense provides dogs and cats with SuperFusion™ Advanced Nutritional Blend. This fusion of high-quality proteins, antioxidant-rich superfoods and prebiotic fibers is purpose-built to support pets in all that they do (the company’s words, not mine).

By Nature sent Rumpy a bag of Active Defense to try. We received the Ocean Whitefish and Green Peas recipe.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the bag was I could smell the fish. Maybe that’s because the first three ingredients are whitefish, whitefish meal, and menhaden fish meal.  But there are other good things in Active Defense, like pumpkin, butternut squash, carrots, spinach, broccoli, apples, pears, blueberries, cranberries, and pomegranate.

Behaviour

Thank you Emma for this insight x

macca1997uk

As I’ve already mentioned, Emma’s behaviour has changed dramatically in the last 12 months. Gone is that independent cat we first adopted, who was loving in her own way and always came charging to the front door when we came home. Nowadays if she actually realises someones in the house, that’s a good day! There are also days when she clearly has no idea who I am. She’s also become very clinging and even a lap cat but has also bitten us on more than a couple of occasions, something she would NEVER have done 18 months ago. We take each day as it comes and are going with the flow with her behaviour, and never take it personally. However, if you have children, or vulnerable adults in the house I would recommend you give extra supervision when they are around your cat, as even the most soppy cat can…

Supplements!

macca1997uk

Spoke to Emma’s vet today. I had found a lot of supplements on-line and I wanted her advice. She has found that a none prescription supplement called aktivait for cats that might help. She has never recommended this before as it’s fairly new, so she has gained other vets from other area’s opinion on this supplement. Emma is going to try it for 60 days and we will let them know if there is any improvement, so it can be advised to others if it helps. I am trying not to get my hopes up, but reading about it, it does seem promising (if she’ll take it!). Apparently Dementia in cats is now known as cognitive dysfunction syndrome, so will know what to look up in future! I’ve also swapped Emm onto grain free food as I’ve read this may help. Hopefully this will help her decline.

Feeding

macca1997uk

I recently read an article about feeding cats with cognitive dysfunction. The article said you must keep to a routine with your cat. Whilst I would agree with this if your cat forgets she has eaten and therefore constantly asks for food, I have to admit I am struggling to know what to do with Emma now she is forgetting to eat. Strong smelling food isn’t working as she isn’t always recognising the smell of things like chicken, even if it’s right under her nose. She also appears to have forgotten her favourite foods (sardines) and even rejected them in favour of attempting to eat my tofu! She seems to remember to eat first thing, but as she has always grazed on food, she tends to just eat a little then forgets to go back. After some research, I have found that there is help out there. I have found a vitamin…

Cat proofing!

macca1997uk

One of the best things I have done for Emma since her diagnosis is to cat proof the garden. It’s so important to keep her in an area she safe because of her deteriorating road skills and the fact she could easily get lost nowadays. She has been able to maintain a good quality of life by keeping her freedom. It is very trial and error getting it right, but worth it in the long run. As long as your fence is high enough you should be able to cat proof it (although if you rent your property I would gain your landlords permission first!). We got the mesh for £5 and used 3 rolls. Other people I know have used pheasant wire or even chicken wire. You need something to hold it up with- we used plastic plant sticks (costing £3 for a bundle of 4, and used 3…
